NOTES

Studio notes

I treated Su Shi’s ci as a slow regular script: looser than kaishu, steadier than cursive, every character holding both slack and tension.

For three-dot water radicals I tried to vary the weight of each stroke, so that writing a great deal of clerical script does not turn into a thousand identical characters.

This piece was later shown in the school art exhibition — the first clerical script of mine to hang on a wall.

“The taste of the world is plain joy” — I kept that line in mind the whole way.
