“Orchid” Scroll
A freehand orchid. Leaves swept with a long tip — dark and pale inside a single stroke — the flowers dotted in.
NOTES
Studio notes
The old rule for orchid leaves is “one long, two short, three breaks the eye”. I practised the sweep for a month before I dared to paint this.
One clump of orchid, a few moss dots — the less there is, the harder it is to hide a mistake.
The inscription runs vertically on the right, answering the movement of the leaves.
Sweeping a leaf is like writing: keep the wrist hollow.
